One of the biggest topics of discussion right now is idols and their “live vocals.” It seems like idols are being scrutinized for their vocals when singing live. Recently, former SECRET NUMBER member Denise did a video about why idols get “worse” at singing.
Denise explained that didn’t apply to everyone and was just general or more common reasons that she found during her time as an idol.
The first reason Denise said was that, “Songs are not meant for the artist,” in the sense that many companies would choose the track to suit the concept they have in mind rather than the discussions on suiting groups or members.
I mean most of the time, the songs are selected by the companies and the artists don’t really have much say, in terms of what songs they choose but these songs are usually selected. They’re more focused on the concept that they’re doing rather than whether it suits the vocals best, is the group able to carry it vocally.

She then added that while there would’ve been discussions it wasn’t a priority and there were ways for “vocals” to be fixed if this was the case, but it did cause problems in the long run.
I’m sure there is some discussion about that behind the scenes, but for the most part, it’s not really a main priority because most of the time, they are going, ‘We can just record it and fix it, and then it will be fine. The members can just practise before they start doing live shows or they just won’t sing live at all. This becomes a really big problem when they do have to start singing the song live.
— Denise
She then added that it didn’t matter how good a singer was, but if a song wasn’t suited to your vocals, it would be tough.
People don’t understand that no matter how good a singer you are, if a song is not in your key or not in your style or not what you’re used to, it’s going to be difficult to sing.

She then added that while it might seem simple to say practise, the performances aren’t just based on vocals but also choreography and concept which is deemed “more important” in K-Pop
The next reason was something Denise said was sometimes forgotten, and it was “vocal health.”
There’s been a lot of instances where I’ve been sick and still had to go on and perform or sing somewhere. There’s also instances where being very transparent with you, they’ve said. ‘Oh,actually, you’re singing live today not lipsyncing.’ So I was like, ‘Time for me to bust out these warm up skills two minutes before I go on.’ Also, being very tired and exhaused really takes a toll on your voice.
— Denise
Denise then explained like with practicing, when netizens say that idols need vocal lessons, there is little to no time for this with all the schedules.
Her final reason was something Denise said people would either accept or not like, and it was saying that, “Some of these idols just aren’t singers.” While all idols are scouted or audition, most are picked for different reasons which aren’t necessarily solely based on their vocals.
It’s well known within the K-Pop community that vocals or ‘talent’ are not one of the most prioritized things in the industry, which at the end of the day, it’s business. Some of these performers are only that, they’re not singers or strong vocalists. Singing is not always something that can be learned. There are just some people that are not meant to sing.
— Denise
There were other reasons, like singing and dancing at the same time is hard, but Denise pointed out the main ones trying to emphasize that netizens should consider all these points before leaving nasty comments to idols.
