BLACKPINK‘s Rosé recently starred on Lee Youngji’s Rainbow. She talked about the creative process for her upcoming album. In particular, her recent release, “number one girl” rocked the charts, gaining popularity for the raw and vulnerable lyrics.
She explained that she had wanted to write a dramatic and extremely emotional song. She searched up malicious comments all night in order to write the song.
Perhaps I was also in a hurry. I was working hard, but it felt like I had become a lazy person. I fell into the bad habit of using internet all night. The internet knows no bounds. I really wanted to be a like, ‘oh I’m a healthy person. I read books at home,’ but I end up using my phone until 5am, and making things hard for myself. I didn’t want to have to say, ‘oh, I looked up malicious comments all night.’ So I thought to myself, ‘I want to write a really disgustingly honest song today,’ ‘It’s okay if it makes me uncomfortable, because I want to really write something extreme.’ That was how I ended up writing “number one girl.” After I wrote the song, I felt so light. It felt like I put in all my feelings into the song. After that, I got addicted to that feeling and spent a year at the studio.
