It’s no secret that, compared to other K-Pop girl groups around the same age, YG Entertainment‘s BLACKPINK has very few songs in their entire discography.
In fact, if you take their total number of songs — which is 32, not including solo songs — and divide it by the number of years that they’ve been active (6), they’ve released an average of only a little over 5 songs per year.
In comparison, TWICE, who debuted just a year earlier, has released 167 songs throughout their career, which makes an average of nearly 24 songs released per year.
However, based on some recent research, it seems like BLACKPINK isn’t the only YG Entertainment group to have an oddly small discography.
On an online forum, netizens were discussing the K-Pop boy groups with the most total unique listeners on MelOn. The top-ranking groups on the list — BTS, BIGBANG, EXO, and SEVENTEEN — were pretty predictable.
It wasn’t the unique listeners ranking that was being most discussed, however, but actually the total number of songs released by each artist that had fans talking. In particular, the YG Entertainment groups on the list — BIGBANG, WINNER, iKON, and Sechskies — all have relatively few songs when compared to artists that debuted around the same time.
On average, here are how many songs each of the four groups mentioned released per year since they debuted:
- BIGBANG: 13.2 songs per year
- WINNER: 7.8 songs per year
- iKON: 7.1 songs per year
- Sechskies: 5.7 songs per year
In comparison, here’s how many songs were released per year on average by artists that debuted around the same time as each of the four above:
- Super Junior: 35.3 songs per year
- GOT7: 21.1 songs per year
- MONSTA X: 36.6 songs per year
- Shinhwa: 13.8 songs per year
In the comments of the article discussing this topic, netizens express their shock at YG Entertainment’s artists’ limited discographies, as well as the fact that they are still ranked relatively high on the chart despite having such few songs.
- “YG really doesn’t work at all…”
- “Wow I was looking at the artists with the least songs and they are all YG”
- “But compared to the small number of songs released… to be able to rank that high is impressive…”
- “Winner and iKON’s total songsㅋㅋㅋㅋ Are they for real…”
- “WINNER making it to top 10 with only 62 songs in which 4 of them are remastered (4 ver.) and 1 remix. If we count average stream per song and average UL, they’ll be in top 5 I guess”
- “I could never stan a yg artist unless I was heavily multi fandom because what are yall doing while everyone else is getting new music every year.”
Considering that this seems like a pattern, it’s unlikely to change anytime soon. However, with their upcoming girl group that’s said to be in the works, maybe YG Entertainment will finally change tactics and release more music to help them keep up with the massive competition in K-Pop right now!
