In the most recent episode of SBS’s My Little Old Boy, first-generation idol Tony An opened up about his mental health.
When Super Junior’s Kim Heechul asked, “Do you get depression,” Tony replied, “I think so.”
Tony An, despite his success with his entertainment and school uniform businesses, struggled with his mental health.
He gradually became distant from people as he struggled to discuss his hardships with his friends. He also revealed that his relationship with his manager became awkward as their position changed to CEO and employee, causing him to feel lonely.
He then started drinking alone and one day suffered from severe headaches, which didn’t go away even after taking more than eight painkillers.
After going to the hospital, he was diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and social phobia and became dependent on psychiatric medication.
Then, one day, he woke up one morning to blood under his pillow after taking drugs and alcohol together before falling asleep.
Looking in the mirror, he realized he had cut his hair with scissors and injured his ear without remembering. He was shocked by the incident and found out later that he had even broken the elevator mirror.
I felt like I could die if I continued this.
— Tony An
He decided from that day on to never drink or take drugs together and added that he tried to get out of the dangerous situation by restraining himself.
