Suhyun confessed on Newsroom that she was going through a slump that made her think about retirement.
Until about two years ago, I was in a slump to the point where I thought about retirement. My older brother gave me much courage. He said that he would make music that I could enjoy and wanted me to feel joy while singing.
Previously, she admitted that she suffered from bulimia through her YouTube channel in May. Currently, she has recovered and is doing well.
I developed a habit of having to eat something when I was stressed, even when I wasn’t hungry. When I came to my senses, I saw myself eating uncontrollably, and that’s when I realized this is bulimia.
Seeing that she had put on a bit of weight during her hiatus, the public expressed rude opinions such as, “You need to lose weight for your health” and “No matter what, you need to take care of yourself.”
Although she reacted to these comments lightly by stating that she couldn’t lose weight because people called her cute, we need to see the bigger picture. Singers are people who sing as a job. Therefore, they should be evaluated by their singing talent and not by their appearance or body. However, the public still evaluate people based on their body shape.
The reason AKMU received much love from the public is not because of her appearance but because of her musical talent. Their melody and honest lyrics evoked sympathy and touched the hearts of many.
But why does she have to be evaluated by the public for her body? Why does she have to explain why she can’t lose weight? Netizens have voiced their support for Soohyun.
- “She’s not an idol that dances. Why does she have to lose weight?”
- “But she really is so cute. But if she gains weight and isn’t ‘cute’ anymore, why must she explain herself? People really be saying rude things like it’s nothing these days.”
- “But she really was so cute when I saw her on a show. I love her confidence, and it’s cute that she knows she’s cute!”
- “I think she looks so cute.”
- “Weight is personal. People saying things about it are so rude.”
If you haven’t heard it already, check out their new song, “Love Lee.”
