When actors are type-cast, they are usually recruited to play similar roles in almost everything they appear in. This has negatives and positives, as many actors eventually feel stuck and unable to grow.
For example, popular actress Kim Sun Young was brought to tears over being only offered “restricting” ahjumma roles.
Recently, netizens expressed frustration over a popular actor continuing to play high school and college characters despite now being in his 30s.
Actor Hwang In Yeop began as a model before debuting in the web series Why. He appeared in the 2019 web series Freshman as a student trying to adapt to university life.
In 2020, he appeared in a K-Drama inspired by the Hollywood movie 17 Again, playing the high school basketball team’s captain. His most popular role to date came as Han Seo Jun in True Beauty, where he was also a high school student.
He appeared in Netflix’s The Sound Of Magic as the main character’s sullen high school classmate. The drama Why Her saw Hwang In Yeop graduate (literally), with the actor now playing a college law student.
His next role is in the upcoming series Family By Choice, a remake of a Chinese drama set to air later this year. Hwang In Yeop shared previews of the show on his Instagram account, showing himself as a student in a high school classroom.
The drama will feature the cast growing up through the years, so he will only be a student for a portion. Still, netizens are a bit tired of seeing the actor play such similar roles in most of his work.
