After 18 years of suffering, a 36-year-old woman has finally discovered the cause of her pain. Unfortunately, this discovery marks a milestone but not the end of her journey to healing — and justice.
On November 5, the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women–a non-profit organization in Thailand dedicated to assisting victims of abuse–shared the woman’s story on their official website. The woman, whose name has not been disclosed, has spent half her life battling pain that began at 18 years old.
During her child’s birth, hospital staff closed a wound to prevent possible excessive bleeding after suturing her. Since then the woman has been tormented by unbearable lower abdominal pain and completely unaware of its cause. It wasn’t until she was X-rayed last year that she found out that the hospital staff had accidentally dropped a needle into her vagina before closing her wound, sealing it inside her.
Unfortunately, the needle still can’t be removed. Due to the needle shifting in her body, her surgery has been postponed three times, and the woman must go to the hospital four times each month to monitor her condition. Though her insurance covers most of her medical expenses, she sought additional funding from the Pavena Foundation to cover additional costs, such as transportation, to ease the financial strain her family is experiencing.
At present, it is unclear if or when the hospital that mistakenly left the needle inside the woman will be compensating her. The hospital has reportedly faced severe backlash online from the public.
