Nakai Masahiro, a former member of the legendary J-Pop group SMAP, has decided to retire after being embroiled in a sexual misconduct scandal.
“As of today, I will retire from entertainment activities. I have completed all discussions with TV stations, radio broadcasters and sponsors regarding my termination, cancellation, removal and contract annulment.
I will continue to face up to all problems sincerely and respond in a wholehearted manner. I alone am responsible for everything.”
— Nakai Masahiro
Previously, Japanese media reported that Masahiro allegedly paid 90 million yen ($ ~568,101 USD) as a lump sum to an unidentified woman. This settlement is related to alleged sexual misconduct that took place in 2023. Confirmed details about the incident and the resulting settlement remain scarce.
Meanwhile, SMAP debuted in 1988 and gained popularity in Japan and across Asia. Nakai was the group’s leader until it disbanded in 2016.
