On January 23, KST, NewJeans made a social media post announcing a fan contest to find a new stage name to use temporarily.
Many suggestions poured in immediately in response. Though the contest is open for two days, it seems that many fans have already settled for a tongue-in-cheek name, “NewZ.”
In a viral Theqoo post, a user made a post praising the suggestion, poining out why it would be a clever choice. The OP (original poster) remarked that Japanese fans already call the group “New-Ji,” close to the pronunciation of “New-Z.” In addition, the “Z” could also denote that the group is a representative of Gen Z, and when rotated, the “Z” becomes “N,” which could signify a new beginning.
The post was then reposted on Instiz, where netizens were thoroughly impressed with the name idea and its possible connotations.
- “Wow, I like this one.”
- “There’s something so cute about NewZ.”
- “Whoa. I like it.”
- “Oh. It’s nice with the Gen Z thing.”
- “Wow. NewZ.”
- “I like it the most among all the suggestions I’ve seen.”
While fans are this excited over the possibility of NewJeans rebranding as a group, ADOR issued a warning against any such step. Read more about it here.
