In a recent public statement, actress Lee Ji Ah, known for her roles in hit dramas like The Penthouse and Thousand Day Promise, addressed the controversy surrounding her family, offering a heartfelt explanation of her position. The actress, who has long been admired for her graceful presence on screen, took to her social media to clear up misunderstandings and clarify her stance on her grandfather’s pro-Japanese actions during the colonial period.
Lee Ji Ah began her statement by apologizing for the delay in addressing the matter, acknowledging the complexity and sensitivity of the situation. She shared that, after much contemplation, she felt it was crucial to correct the facts and take responsibility, despite the personal difficulty of doing so.
Hello, this is Lee Ji Ah.
I would like to share my stance regarding the recently reported issues.
Although I have been cautious and deliberating for a long time, I now believe that it is the right thing to take responsibility and correct the facts, even at this late stage. So, though it is difficult, I gather the courage to speak out.
I sincerely apologize for the delay in expressing my position.
Facts regarding the family dispute:
Since I became independent at the age of 18, I have never received any financial support from my parents. Due to a complicated family history, I have cut ties with them for over 10 years. Regarding the recent controversy involving family property, lawsuits, and land ownership disputes, I was completely unaware and have no involvement. My stance on the controversy regarding my grandfather’s pro-Japanese actions
My grandfather passed away when I was two years old, so I have no memories of him, and I was raised without knowledge of his pro-Japanese activities. It was only in 2011, when I came across an article, that I first learned about this issue. To verify the facts, I visited the Institute for Korean National Studies multiple times and reviewed related materials to study the issue.
During that process, I found records of my grandfather’s contributions, and even considering the historical context of the time, I believe that these actions cannot be justified for any reason.
If the land in Anyang, which is at the center of this controversy, was acquired during the Japanese occupation, I strongly believe it should be returned to the state.
For my final remarks:
I have never made any statements about my grandfather in the past, nor have I used my family to promote myself. However, there was a spread of incorrect information on online communities and in comments, claiming that I said I “respect my grandfather.” This is not true, and I would like to correct it.
Finally, I deeply recognize the historical mistakes of my grandfather and sincerely apologize as his descendant. I will continue to approach the truth of history with a humble attitude and live with a sense of responsibility.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Lee Ji Ah.— Lee Ji Ah
