IU recently shared an unexpected behind-the-scenes story from filming her latest K-Drama, When Life Gives You Tangerines. The beloved singer stars next to Park Bo Gum in the popular series that just dropped its second act and four new episodes.

In a newly released video on Netflix’s official YouTube channel, IU sat down with co-stars Moon So Ri and Park Hae Joon to watch and react to highlights from the recent episodes. While reminiscing about certain scenes, she made an unexpected confession.
During a moment where her character shares a conversation with Park Hae Joon’s character at a Chinese restaurant, IU revealed that she had to actually drink alcohol while filming. She explained that they wanted her character to have a natural look, and using makeup to create a flushed effect might have come across as too artificial or even cute.
I actually had a drink while filming this. That reddish hue — if done with makeup, it could have ended up looking a bit too cute.

Park Hae Joon also shared his own struggles with the scene, pointing out how difficult it was to time everything correctly. Since the moment involved eating, he had to carefully match his movements — picking up squid, slurping noodles, and keeping the flow of the conversation going. He joked that he kept second-guessing whether he should eat or not, which made the process even trickier.
IU also discussed the effort that went into her narration as Geummyeong. She revealed that it took nearly two months to record as she worked hard to find the right tone. She explained that she aimed for a voice that still sounded like her but could also transition naturally to the older version played by an older actor. To distinguish between the different ages, she kept Geummyeong’s speaking voice close to her natural lower register but went even deeper for the narration.

IU’s dedication to her role shows just how much effort went into bringing When Life Gives You Tangerines to life, making fans appreciate the K-Drama even more.
