Veteran actress and voice artist Jang Mi Ja, beloved for her memorable roles in Clinic for Married Couples: Love and War and King the Land, has passed away at the age of 84.
The Korean Broadcast Performers’ Union announced on January 27 that Jang succumbed to a long-term illness earlier in the morning.
Known for seamlessly transitioning between stage, television, and film, Jang made notable appearances in several acclaimed K-Dramas, including Toji, The Second Republic, The Sons of Sol Pharmacy House, Believe in Love, The Light in Your Eyes, and King the Land. Her portrayal of a stern mother-in-law in Clinic for Married Couples: Love and War earned her the affectionate title of “the nation’s mother-in-law,” making her a household name.
On the theater stage, Jang often performed alongside her colleague and husband, actor Park Woong. Just last year, the couple appeared together in the play Dancing Silver Portrait.
Jang is survived by her husband and their two sons. Her second son, Park Joon, has followed in her footsteps as an actor. A memorial has been arranged at the Seoul National University Hospital funeral hall in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The funeral procession will take place on January 29 at 6 AM, with her final resting place at Seoul City Cemetery.
May she rest in peace.
