Amid NewJeans announcing the termination of their exclusive contract with ADOR and continuing independent activities, five Korean entertainment organizations have called for establishing anti-tampering legislation as the controversy grows.
Five music organizations, including the Korea Entertainment Management Association, Korea Entertainment Producers Association, Korea Music Label Industry Association, Korea Recording Industry Association, and the Korea Music Content Association, released a statement on February 19.
The five music organizations would like to ask certain agencies and artists to stop manipulating public opinion without any basis to achieve their own interests to ensure the sustainable development of the popular culture and arts industry. We also ask the National Assembly and the government to support eradicating tampering, which is the main cause of conflict.

The five associations mentioned NewJeans’ recent incident and argued, “in order to resolve the issue, the bill should be revised with accurate fact-checking and sufficient consultation with the relevant parties, not through a public opinion war.”

They felt that the actions taken by former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin and NewJeans were not the best way to resolve issues.
In the past ten months, incidents such as Min Hee Jin’s press conference, Hanni’s appearance at the National Assembly, and the group’s independent activities have attempted to resolve issues through public opinion and unilateral decisions rather than privately through negotiations or legal procedures. The conflict surrounding them continues to this day.

The associations emphasized that they were not discussing the dispute between a specific agency and artist but rather trying to inform the public of how fatal this situation is to the K-Pop industry.
They also called for establishing laws to prevent tampering in the music industry.
“NewJeans’ press conference last year became an opportunity for private disputes between artists and agencies to be excessively exposed to the media. With this, the cases of engaging in independent activities before receiving legal judgment have increased.
Artists who represent K-Pop are influencing public opinion and creating confusion in the industry through press conferences and independent activities, leading the K-Pop industry into a crisis.”

They felt that this could no longer be a situation to be ignored.
“We must prioritize responding to suspicions of tampering as it is an act that can instantly destroy a management company that has invested heavily into an artist solely based on the artist’s future value.
If contracts are not legally protected and are terminated by a unilateral decision, the K-Pop industry will lose its foundation for survival.”

They urged the government to recognize the severity of the situation in the K-Pop industry, one of the core industries representing Korea.
